The first vaccine formulated by artificial intelligence

Computers once assisted in drug formulation, but creating a vaccine entirely via AI is a major leap for modern medicine.

According to Prof. Nikolai Petrovsky (Russia), the research lead, the team first created 'SAM', a program designed to distinguish compounds that can trigger the human immune system.

Next, another program synthesized trillions of chemical compounds. AI used both programs to analyze and identify the best drugs for the human immune system.

The best drugs identified by SAM were analyzed and tested on human blood cells in the lab.

“This confirms that SAM not only identifies good drugs, but the vaccine it found is actually better than current ones,” the professor shared.

These drugs were also tested on animals. “Results show the new vaccine has very high resistance to flu viruses, many times better than current ones. We just need to prove this in humans,” the lead researcher said.

Regular check-ups before pregnancy help parents prevent disease and feel more secure. Any issues can be treated proactively. Even minor illnesses like the flu can cause trouble; serious ones can impact both mother and child.

Before pregnancy, women should have a general health check. During pregnancy, regular prenatal visits are essential.

If the SAM-synthesized vaccine works in humans, medicine could save decades of research and millions of dollars. The vaccine is testing at Flinders and expanding globally, entering a 12-month trial across the US.

Petrovsky hopes the SAM-created vaccine demonstrates superior efficacy, supplementing or replacing existing vaccines.

He added: “If successful, SAM technology could improve or create many other vaccines beyond the flu.”
